Part 2: Sheltering from the rain, escaping from the sun
Chapter 6: Today too, the light shines to be corrupted
A storm was raging on that evening.
At time like these, I felt strangely lonely in this dimly-lit church.
Suddenly, I wished that someone would come in, though it was very unlikely that anyone would come during such a time.
Naturally, it was because of the heavy rain outside.
In a room illuminated with magic lights, sometimes looking anxiously at the raindrops on th window, I turned the pages of a book.
*Plip* *Plip*
The book I had been reading was about a boy and a girl from the nobility who gave up on their position and eloped together. Certainly, it was a book which existed purely for entertainment, and not one that should be read by a member of the clergy.
However, I was not formally an official sister or anything to begin with.
I was just a woman who had sneaked into an abandoned church on her own accord, and had called herself a nun as a result.
Therefore, it was too late to be worrying about it.
"I wonder if the rainy season has begun."
Such words would occasionally spill out, as if to drown my loneliness.
Lately, temperature had been rising, and I could feel on my skin that summer was approaching.
The harsh sunlight and incessant downpour proper to the heigh of summer will soon be there.
It was depressing.
Because of the humidity, food will become moldy and laundry will also be difficult to dry.
Above all, bad weather had the effect of clouding people's minds.
The number of people coming to seek my advice will increase.
There wasn't a point in worrying about a future which I didn't know how. However, such worries had been my daily life since coming to this church.
Empirical facts are sometimes more accurate than any theory.
"I hope it will be sunny tomorrow......."
Here was me again, talking to myself.
Then, overlapping my voice, I thought that I heard something moving outside.
I was already dark outside, and the time for the city to fall asleep with growing near.
At this time, was it a thief, or someone in need of help?
I put a bookmark on the page I was about to read, closed the book and left the room.
I went to the imposing front door of the church, opened it, and fearfully peeked outside.
Then, I saw two girls who were sitting, huddled together.
Maybe noticing my gaze, one of the two-- a girl with black, looked up to me.
Crimson eyes, which were clearly visible even in the darkness of the night.
Mesmerized by the beauty of her eyes, I even forgot to breather for a moment.
After looking at each other for a while, the girl frowned and opened her mouth with a troubled expression.
"Um, if it is not an issue, would it be possible to let us in? We have nowhere to go, so we are in trouble."
I came back to my senses at the sound of her voice, and looked and the orange-haired girl, whose eyes were as red as the black-haired girl's.
She was wearing rags....... it was obvious to recognize her as one of the people from the waste town.
There had been once a girl from a waste town who had visited the church, just as this girl now.
It hadn't been raining when she had come, but it had been during the night.
At that time, I had looked out of my room's window, and I had known that it had been someone from the waste town that had been needing help....... and without hesitation, I had abandoned her.
I had thought that if I didn't help, then someone else would do so, and put that responsibility away.
On the next morning, she had been crushed on the side of the road close to the church, probably as a result of an execution.
When I heard about the dead body-- I felt absolutely no guilt, not had my conscience hurt.
I had been a real shock, and a great shame.
I had resolved myself to help without fault if the occasion happened once again.
Seeing the two girls in front of me made me remember that promise to myself.
Even if saving the people of the waste town meant that I had to break the law--
"You will catch a cold if you stay this wet, please quickly come inside."
Whether they come from the waste town or not, people are people, and a life is a life.
We should not discriminate people based on their birth or their social rank.
Seeing their smiling face only served to further convince myself of that notion.
◇◇◇
Finding them sitting shoulder to shoulder adorably on a bench in the chapel, I handed each of them a towel.
"Thanks."
The orange-haired girl sent me a friendly smile.
People from the waste town are not educated, and therefore have no manner-- this was the vision of the people living in the city. However, this girl appeared to be the exception to the rule.
If she hadn't been wearing such tattered clothes, no one would have thought that she was from the waste town.
Furthermore, I gave the two girls two extra nun's uniform I had taken from my room.
It would be difficult to sleep with soaking wet clothes, even if they were your favorite.
"Is it alright to not only stay the night, but even borrow clothes?"
"It is the duty of the clergy to save people, so please do not hesitate to take them. Um---"
"Ah, right, my name is Chigusa."
"I am Eris."
"Chigusa and Eris, was it? Please call me Nunnally. I am about five years older than both of you, I think? Please treat me well."
I bowed to them, and they did so as well.
"Yes, please treat Onee-sama and I well."
I was caught off guard by her use of "Onee-sama", but seeing as they had the same eye colors, they must have been sisters.
But this city is a difficult place to live for people of the waste town.
Even if they had been provided to place to sleep, they would be forced to live here until they find a way to live.
I didn't know how long we would be together, but from what I had seen from the two so far-- I felt this arrangement could work
◇◇◇
It happened late in the night, just after Chigusa and Eris had come to the church.
Having fallen asleep at one point, I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night.
Perhaps my body had found it difficult to sleep due to the humidity.
Still in a daze, I looked at the clock and saw that it was 2:23.
No matter how much of a clergyman one might be, it was still way too earlier to wake up.
Even though I could have gone right back to sleep again, I felt strangely thirsty. I got out of bed, left the room and went to the kitchen.
I grab a cup from the shelf, opened the tap, and quenched my thirst with the clear water that came out.
When I had been a child, my parents had told me not to drink the water from the tap. The advances made in magical purification techniques were simply mind-boggling.
Having satisfied my thirst, I left the kitchen and began my way back to my room.
At the time however, mixed in with the sound of rain, I noticed an unfamiliar sound.
It came from the room I gave to Chigusa and Eris, in the opposite direction from my room.
Eavesdropping is bad-- though I knew that in my mind, the unfamiliar high-pitched sounds piqued my curiosity. I slowly approached their room, making sure not to make a noise.
"Aahh.... Mm....."
The sounds became cleared as I got closer to the room, and by the time I was standing in front of the door, I could even recognize whose voice was making them.
"Haa... Haaaa.... Onee-samaaa!"
There was no doubt about it. That voice belonged to Eris.
Rough breathing, a feverish panting voice, and a wet sound echoing from inside the room.
Besides, I was sure I had heard it before.
"No way, I didn't know these two had that kind of relationship......."
No, even in that case, to do such a thing in the church which had provided them with help.
However, I didn't have the courage to barge into the room and give them a warning.
After much worry and distress, I decided to let the matter drop today and left the room.
I resolved myself to be careful of any sort inconvenience from tomorrow onwards.
Form tomorrow onwards, if there are any sort of inconvenience.
But even as I went back to my room and crawled into my bed, I felt as if I could hear Eris's voice, despite the distance between our rooms making that impossible.
With my face burning from shame, I obviously could not find sleep after that.
I ended up staying awake for most of the morning, and had to spend the next day in sleep-deprived state.
◇◇◇
On the next day, two of them, having woken up much earlier than I would have expected, greeted me as if nothing had happened.
"Good morning, Nunnaly."
"Good mornin' Nunnaly."
"Did you have a good night's sleep?"
"Yes, thanks to you."
Chigusa responded without any sign of agitation.
Seeing how calm she looked, it would be so easily to dismiss what happened last night as a dream.
But because I had found out about the relationship between the two, I became curious about everything they did.
Bodies that would occasionally touch in an unnatural way, intertwined gazes-- these seemed to show the strength of the bond between the two of them.
As I was absentmindedly preparing breakfast--
"Ouch--"
I cut my finger with a knife.
As I was holding my finger in a state of panic, I felt something warm on my back.
Chigusa was hugging me from behind.
Then, she took my hand and put my finger into her mouth.
"Chi-Chigusa !?"
Not paying attention to my reaction, Chigusa licked and sucked my bleeding finger, leaving some saliva.
My heart was pounding wildly, her tongue reminding me of the previous night.
Even if she was only sucking my finger, a thrilling sensation would go back my back every time my fingertip would be touched by her tongue.
More than that, and I would go crazy-- I was at my limit.
I pulled my finger out of her mouth, hurried to the faucet and rinsed the wound with water.
Though perhaps because she had been licking my wound, the blood had already stopped.
"I am sorry."
I was worried that I had upset them, since I had reacted as if I had been touched by something filthy. However, Chigusa didn't seem to feel that way.
Rather, she affectionately stroked my hand and looked at my cleaned fingertip with sincere worry.
But I wonder.......why......?
My skin felt awfully ticklish when she touched me, despite only being the tip of my finger.
Yes, even now.
I was as if something other than her body heat was flowing in from her body.
"I am sorry for startling you so suddenly."
"N-no, I know that Chigusa was only concerned about me. I am simply not used to this sort of actions."
"I am glad. I was a bit worried that you might not like me."
Chigusa responded with an eerie smile.
She was looking straight at me, her red eyes seemingly drawing me heart to them.
Trying to drag me into a deeper abyss.
Blood boiling at the sound of my racing heart.
Like back then-- when I had fallen in love with the wrong person.
No, much stronger that that, it was a feeling that melted your heart and enveloped your soul.
Ah...... this person, she is a witch.
Regardless of any malicious intent, my heart will eventually be robbed if we keep stating at each other like this.
I interrupted it and quickly looked away.
From her perspective, it might have looked as if I had turned away with a blush on face due to embarassement.
Seeing this, Chigusa put her hand over her mouth and let out an elegant, yet bewitching laugh.

Here, ナナリー was romanized as Nunnally. The motivation was of course Nunnally vi Britannia (ナナリー・ヴィ・ブリタニア) from Code Geass.
